Groundwork has been involved for several years with secondary schools, developing alternative curriculum programmes. In 2003 we received funding through Connexions Derbyshire to deliver aprogramme called "Skills For Life". This heralded the beginning of Groundwork's involvement with a then new area of work: Citizenship.
There are curently several programmes operating within this programme area, one of which is the THINK! project. Now in its second year, THINK! is funded by Amber Valley Borough Council through their Community Safety budget. Its main aim is to work with young people, to make them aware of their rights and responsibilities, as a young person in their community and society at large.
The participants are identified by their school, Connexions and the local police as being "at risk of offending", or are already low-level offenders. The participants take an active role in workshops and activities on a regular basis, covering such topics as the criminal justice system, drugs and sexual health education, outward bound activities, confidence building, practical conservation work on local nature reserves and drama.
We hope that this programme will expand in future years to cover the whole of Derbyshire. To this end we are in consultation with the borough councils, Derbsyhire Constabulary, the Youth Offending Service and Connexions.
